How the Championship Event Ended up in Federal Way

Doc Reiss ” The first sand sculpture contest was organized over 30 years ago as a fund raiser for charity. The World’s is proud to honour that tradition. Net proceeds from the event will benefit two all-volunteer organizations. One is a golf course for wounded veterans and provides rehabilitation services at no-cost to veterans, many of whom are amputees. The other provides transitional housing to abused, battered, or homeless women and children in the Puget Sound region.”

Sand Sculpture Events, LLC finds a new home for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting

14 08 2010

Usually, when you see a title like “The World Championship ” you expect to see a contest of the best in their field. And that you will see. What you won´t see though is that there have been people all over the world who spent their time and effort to put this before you. Whenever there was a need, someone has stepped forward to help out.

I am certain someone, somewhere could figure out the exact date, but my memory is about as long as a piece of string. Suffice to say, awhile back I got a call from Charlie Beaulieu, a master sculptor, world champion several times over and my co-organizer in an annual summer masters contest, held in Port Angeles, Washington.

A Short History of the World Championship of Sand Sculpting

14 08 2010

When the Agassiz-Harrison Lions Club voted in 1986 to contribute two hundred dollars toward the cost of a sand sculpture demonstration, they could have never imagined that, just four years later, they would be involved with a world championship competition and the Guinness Book of Records.

At that time, the world championship sandcastle contest was being held in White Rock, BC. Drawing crowds of 100,000 people, it proved to be too successful, as it also drew a rowdy element that vandalized the small town and forced the White Rock council to ban the event. Federal Way Rescues World Championship of Sand Sculpting

3 08 2010

Federal Way Mirror Reporter
Jul 22 2010, 2:57 PM · UPDATED

Just when Federal Way’s World Championship of Sand Sculpting competition looked like it would be a bust, the city agreed to pitch in $58,000 to rescue the event.

On Tuesday, the Federal Way City Council voted 3- 2 to give the non-profit Federal Way Community Council, the championship’s organizing body, the remaining money it needs to hold the competition. City council members Jack Dovey, Jim Ferrell and deputy mayor Dini Duclos voted for the motion. Council members Mike Park and Jeanne Burbidge voted against it.

Council member Roger Freeman was absent from the meeting and mayor Linda Kochmar abstained from voting.

“I abstained because I could not, in good conscience, vote for this,” Kochmar said.

The funding is considered a grant because the city is not allowed to act as a loaning agency. It comes from the city’s $3 million Redevelopment Fund. There are no other plans to use the money soon, financial services administrator Bryant Enge said. The $58,000 was requested by World Championship Sand Sculpting executive board members Rudi Alcott, also publisher of The Mirror, and Bob Hitchcock. Read the rest of this entry »

Clarification on sand sculpting report | Federal Way letters

3 08 2010

Jul 27 2010, 12:28 PM

There is a mistake in the sand sculpting story on page 1 of the July 24 issue in the Federal Way Mirror. The story stated that a $23,000 grant was from “city tourism enhancement.” That $23,000 came from the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC).

LTAC’s broad mission is to improve city revenue from tourism. The Tourism Enhancement Grant Program (TEG) is administered by an LTAC subcommittee. TEG has very narrow guidelines. Annual funding has ranged from $30,000 to $50,000 for the two grant periods per year program. The grant applications are reviewed by a five-member committee and recommendations are forwarded on to LTAC, the city’s FEDRAC committee and the full council.

This year, the sand sculpting group received $23,000 from LTAC and submitted a grant appliation to TEG for an additional $23,000. TEG did not approve the grant request for the additional monies.

H. David Kaplan, chairman, Tourism Enhancement Grant Review Committee
